The City of South Lyon is located near the crossroads of Interstate 96 and US 23, in the southwest corner of Oakland County, Michigan. Lansing, the state capital of Michigan is located less than an hour drive west and Detroit is just 45 minutes to the east. The center of the business district is at Ten Mile Road and Pontiac Trail, known as Lake Street and Lafayette within the City. The newly expanded Salem-South Lyon District Library opened for business on May 2, 1998. The 15,000 sq.ft. facility is being finance by a $2.5 million bond issue approved by the voters in May 1995. The building is designed to accommodate an expansion from 22,000 volumes to 60,000 volumes.
The City has over 200 acres of parkland including McHattie Park, Volunteer Park, Paul Baker Memorial Park, Andover Park, Columbia Park and the Huron Valley Rail Trail.
McHattie Park is located in the heart of the City of South Lyon off Lafayette Street, this nearly 15 acre park has something for everyone, including playground equipment, little league ball diamonds, sand volleyball courts, sledding hill, outdoor ice skating and hockey rink, along with plenty of open spaces for picnics and outdoor fun. McHattie Park is home to the historic Witch’s Hat Depot Museum, the Freight House and the Victorian Gazebo. Paul Baker Memorial Park is at the intersection of Lake Street and Reynold Sweet Parkway along the Huron Valley Rail Trail. With a beautiful fountain and gazebo this small park is a great place to stop and rest as you make your way along the trail.
